The efforts of Adam and Eve to cover their nakedness with fig leaves did nothing to solve the larger problem of sin that had entered their lives.

Name

(to give a)

Regions, cities, altars, and wells all received names in the Bible; but here we consider the process of naming or renaming a person. When we give names to our children, we want them to sound just right with the proper blend of vowels, consonants, and cadence. We also want them to be unusual, but not so unusual that they become a social burden. Similar concerns and passions filled parents in Bible times as well.

The process of giving a name to a child appears to have been a role that father and mother shared; one or both were given credit for assigning the child’s name (Gen. 4:25; 5:3; see also Gen. 16:13, 15). The most detailed description of the process comes to us from the life of Zechariah and Elizabeth when they named their son (Luke 1:59–63). According to the custom of that time, the day of John’s circumcision was the day on which he received his name. The family was ready to name the child Zechariah after his father, but Elizabeth quickly objected, insisting that his name be John. The extended family protested because no one in their family had that name. In the end they turned to the temporarily mute Zechariah, who wrote, “His name is John.”
